“Can I get you anything, possum?” Lester asked, solicitously.

“You could try giving him painkillers by suppository.”

“Shut up, mother.”

“It’s a miracle I didn’t drown the little sod at birth,” Julia Denton said. “I should have sued Durex, as well.”

“It’s no wonder I have a rejection complex,” Lyle said, sounding aggrieved. “One of your special hot whiskies would be lovely, wombat.”

“I thought you two had moved on from Australian mammals?”

“We like Australian mammals, mother dearest.”

Julia rolled her eyes. “There’s a sticky toffee pudding in the freezer. If he won’t eat that, take him to A&E.”
