Danny knew he’d been stupid to venture this far from the river and the caves, but he was hungry and had wanted to practice with his new slingshot.

He’d lost track of time until the heat from the sun had made him realise he was a long way from both water and shelter.

A few hundred metres away, he could see a slight overhang on one of the towering sandstone cliffs.

It would have to do.

The young Australopithicine that had beaten him to the shade glared balefully but seemed willing to share.

They were both idiots and knew it.
