The sharp squeal of pain had Becker on his feet in an instant, dropping his book on the bed and dashing off to the playroom to see who’d been playing too rough.

“What happened, kids?” He gathered all three pups into his arms and sat down.

Kay let out a whimper then pretended it hadn’t come from her.

Becker quickly checked her over and discovered nothing more troublesome than a bruised paw.

He kissed it better.

She snuggled up to him, instantly forgetting whatever rough and tumble had led to the squeal.

Her brothers had the grace to look guilty.
