The soldiers quickly fanned out as they emerged from the anomaly.

Captain Ross stared around, struggling to keep emotion off his face.

Buildings with shattered windows, dark like bruised eyes.

Rubble piles everywhere.

Rusting carcasses of ancient cars.

A war had been fought here but there were no bodies.

Maybe time had taken care of them, but there should still have been rag-clad corpses, flesh desiccated in the heat, or maybe just bleached bones.

Ross knew, without knowing how, that this was a world devoid of human life.

All his instincts told him to get the hell out of there.
