Lester kept his best poker-face firmly in place throughout the verbal report of the anomaly team’s day chasing an infestation of over-sized, chronically stupid and very hairy marsupials around a stately home in the Cotswolds.

When told Becker had thrown himself to the floor to catch a priceless Chinese vase before it ended up as a very expensive jigsaw, he just smiled and nodded approvingly.

But when Jenny tried to tell him that Cutter had been polite to a journalist, he knew perfectly well that they were all lying through their collective teeth.

Some things really were completely beyond belief.
