The girl skidded on the mud and shit coating the cobbles, diving down a narrow alley past the butcher’s shop.
The dogs that hung around were her friends and would slow down the bastards chasing her. Street dogs were no friends to the peelers.
A sudden flare of light surrounded her, hurting her eyes, making her skin prickle.
She tripped, falling onto warm, soft sand.
The light flared and disappeared.
“Another fecking stray.” A man with Irish accent, sounding cold and uninterested.
She looked up into a woman’s kind brown eyes.
“Hello. My name is Charlotte,” the woman said, smiling.
