An insistent buzz made Jess spin around, staring nervously into the air.
The noise stopped.
She drew in a long, slow breath and held it, listening.
Nothing.
She exhaled and turned back to her monitors.
The droning started again.
She grabbed her handbag, rummaging for her epi-pen. No leaving it in the car, not any more.
A quiet voice from behind her said, “Knock, knock…”
“Who’s there?”
A rolled-up magazine flashed past her nose and slapped down onto the desk.
“Amos.”
“Amos who?”
“A mosquito.”
Jess smiled brightly. She really hated mosquitoes.
Fortunately, Becker was very good at hunting them.
