The ring weighed heavily on its golden chain around Frodo’s neck.
The further he walked, the heavier it became.
The Black Land drew closer with every step and the Shire receded in his thoughts with every mile south he walked.
Memories of happier days become harder and harder to bring back to mind.
Frodo held tightly to the ring at night but during the day he wondered what it would be like to simply cast it aside into a marsh, a stream or a deep hole in the ground.
Or simply to hand it freely to one of his companions.
