“Bad day?” Ryan poured a large glass of red wine and handed it to his lover.
“Could have been worse,” Becker admitted, wrapping his arms around Ryan’s waist and giving him a quick kiss. “Where are the kids?”
“Trying to drown each other in the paddling pool.”
“Have they succeeded yet?”
“They have been a bit quiet recently…”
Becker thumped Ryan lightly, downed half of the wine and wandered out to see what their furry brats were getting up to.
The slide had been pushed over to the paddling pool and Alex and Kay were taking it in turns to clamber up the ladder, swoosh down the slide and hurtle into the plastic pool, yipping loudly, before jumping out, shaking water everywhere and rushing back for another go.
Becker stood in the conservatory, sipping his wine and watching them play, the tedium of a long day slipping away from him. His shift had consisted of dashing around to multiple anomalies and arriving just after they’d winked out of existence, and then scouring the surrounding area for tracks. It had been frustrating, to put it mildly. And boring. Very, very boring. Their last shout had been to an area of woodland no more than half a mile away from their house, but the anomaly had vanished almost as quickly as it had appeared on Connor’s screens.
The report writing had lasted considerably longer than each of the anomalies put together.
On her third flying leap from the bottom of the slide, Kay noticed her dad watching them and scrabbled madly out of the water, her tail wagging ten to the dozen as she threw herself at Becker, water drops flying everywhere. He scooped her up under one arm, tucked an equally wet Alex under the other and looked around for Marcus.
A moment later, a bundle of black fur slid down into the water then bounced up and down, barking in excitement, looking up at the slide rather than at Becker.
Two long-fingered paws gripped the top of the slide and a furry, bandit face peeked over the top, whiskers twitching.
Marcus barked encouragingly.
A black and white bundle of fur came careering down the slide and landed in the water, all four paws spayed out to break the fall. The small creature popped up, sharp nose twitching, then clambered out after Marcus.
“Ryan!”
“What’s the problem?” Ryan asked, wandering out carrying the wine bottle.
Becker gestured with his glass at Marcus’s furry companion.
“What the fuck is a baby raccoon doing in our paddling pool?” Ryan asked, in the voice of a man who had seen way, way weirder things than that in the not-too-distant past.
“It came down the slide after Marcus. Other than that, I have absolutely no fucking idea,” Becker admitted.
Alex and Kay yipped madly, finding it hilarious – as ever – when either of their parents swore.
“Don’t repeat that at school,” Ryan said automatically.
The pair barked in unison.
The little raccoon shook itself and promptly fell over, wet whiskers still twitching. Marcus pounced on his new friend and the pair rolled over and over, yipping happily.
“What are we going to do?” Becker asked.
“Find an extra bowl for teatime and fetch another towel?”
“Sounds like a good plan.”
