Bright red blood spilt on stark white snow.

Two dead, three seriously injured, and they had been unable to save the creature.

Not one of their better days.

Even now, several hours later, the colour red made him feel sick.

Without a word, Lester whisked the two full glasses off the table and took a bottle of chilled Chablis from the fridge instead.

Nick smiled his thanks and sipped at the wine, trying to banish the memories.

“If wishes were horses, beggars could ride. It’s over, Nick. You did all you could.”

Lester was right, but it still didn’t help.
