reggietate. I hope you like this and that you have a lovely birthday!
Their relationship hadn’t exactly got off to a flying start, even Nick had to admit that.
Forgetting a woman’s name is never a good thing. Calling them by someone else’s name is much worse. And, worse than either of those things, is telling them that they used to be someone else. That was pretty unforgiveable really, in the cold light of day.
So, all in all, he could have done better but, in his defence, he’d had a lot to get to grips with in only a short time, including timeline changes and the knowledge of an adulterous best friend.

Gradually he learned to make fewer stupid mistakes. Even more gradually, she softened, in all sorts of ways. Paradoxically, that actually made things harder for a while, made it even more likely that he would call her by the wrong name.
But he did learn from his mistakes, and gradually they built a relationship of their own, founded on mutual respect, even if they did sometimes lack mutual understanding.
And eventually they moved beyond a working relationship into a personal one, and when that happened, Nick was very, very careful indeed when it came to the correct use of names.
* * * * *
Their relationships remained volatile, at home and at work, but they learned to talk through their problems, something which Nick would be the first to admit didn’t come easily to him. But he’d already lost someone important to him though his inability to confront issues, and he was determined not to let that happen again.
And he found that talking helped.
Nick eventually learned to let go of the past, although there were still times when he felt there were three people in the marital bed, and he knew Jenny did too.
But they both learned to live with it.
* * * * *
Three years to the day after Nick came through an anomaly to find a changed world, he and Jenny Lewis married. Their colleagues and friends were in attendance and the ghosts of the past kept their distance.
They continued to work together, and their rows, when they occurred, were still spectacular, but Nick had learned the hard way that the sun should never be allowed to set on a disagreement.
Those who knew them agreed that they had both mellowed.
It came as something of a surprise to all concerned, including her husband, when Jenny announced that she was pregnant.
* * * * *
The pregnancy could not have been described as uneventful, the usual procession of refugees from different eras made sure that.
Jenny’s labour was uncomplicated, but lengthy. During it she threatened to castrate her husband if he brought ‘that thing’ near her again.
For once in his life, Nick had the sense not to argue, which was fortunate really, as Jenny was, at that point, most certainly not joking.
Their daughter’s entrance into the world changed everything for Nick.
He knew that he belonged in this reality and no other.
Claudia Jennifer Cutter and her mother had made sure of that.
