His ex-wife had always claimed that the only milestone in his daughter’s life that he’d bothered to turn up for had been the conception.

He’d missed her first birthday by attending a political conference.

On her first day at school he’d had a meeting with the Prime Minister.

When she’d appeared in her first school play he’d been dealing with a crisis in the Prison Service.

On the day she’d received her GCSE results he’d been detained by dinosaurs.

He’d even arrived too late to hold her hand as she’d died.

Being on time for her funeral was no consolation.

This was ridiculously sad. I think the angst bunnies are multiplying at nuclear speed. Poor poor Lester. And yes, no parent should ever outlive their child. It's a nightmare you never really wake from.
