Haleth leaned against the wall, almost too tired to think and certainly too tired to cross the Veil. He pulled at the lacings of his battered green jacket and allowed it to fall open. He had spent the last 24 hours helping Nathan deal with the aftermath of an ill-advised exorcism carried out by one of his fellow priests who had, without a shadow of a doubt, bitten off more than he could chew. Instead of banishing a ghost, the idiot had managed to summon a minor demon. A minor demon that just happened to have some very interesting friends and relatives, all of whom had decided to throw an impromptu welcome home party in someone else’s house.
Nathan closed the door of the flat with a backward kick and gestured to the kitchen. “Beer?”
The faery nodded, letting his eyes close for a minute. He heard the fridge door open and shut, and the hiss as the bottle tops were flipped off. Nathan knew better than to offer him a can. There were some things that strained even his famed tolerance for the mortal world, and alcohol encased in metal was an offence by any standards.
He opened his eyes as the priest handed him the bottle. Nathan looked as bad as he felt. It had been a difficult day but the beer was cold and very welcome. He drained the bottle in three long swallows and handed it back. Nathan tossed it into the recycling bin. He took two mouthfuls from his own bottle then surrendered it to Hal in response to a hopefully-raised eyebrow.
Hal finished the beer and threw the bottle in the direction of the first one. The clink of glass bore witness to his accuracy.
“You look knackered,” said the priest.
“While you, on the other hand, have the resilience of the godly and feel fresh as a daisy.”
“No. I feel like shit. But as neither of us have had any sleep in nearly 24 hours, I suppose that’s hardly surprising. Do you want the bed or the couch?”
Hal closed his eyes again. “Your home, your choice.”
In reply, cool lips covered his. The faery opened his mouth and received a tongue that tasted pleasantly of beer. The kiss was soft and hesitant. Nathan was, as ever, torn between his feelings and the dictates of his Church. Hal kept his eyes closed and his arms by his side. In truth, he was too exhausted to even consider engaging in one of their customary debates on the subject and he didn’t want to take the risk of causing the other man to back off, so quiescence seemed the best course of action.
Soft lips worked on his and the kiss deepened, heads turning sideways, tongues meeting again. Eventually Hal took a risk and slid a hand behind the other man’s neck and twined his fingers in the short curly hair. Nathan’s hands slipped inside his jacket and rested lightly on his waist. Hal ached with exhaustion but that wasn’t the only ache he was suffering from. After a few moments he felt the tension start to ebb from Nathan’s body. If he was lucky there wouldn’t need to be a debate. If he was honest with himself, he doubted either of them had the energy to do much that would be worthy of the bishop’s disapproval, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try to rise to the occasion.
Nathan drew back enough to breathe the word “Bed,” into the faery’s mouth.
Haleth opened his eyes and grinned. “Can I have another beer as well?”

Date: 2011-04-14 08:46 pm (UTC)So, in your mind there is a bible for all these characters, right? I haven't missed a story where we get really introduced to them?

Date: 2011-04-15 07:14 am (UTC)Writing (or in this case editing) these drabbles/ficlets etc was a way of getting me back into this world alongside my fanfic. I haven't posted anything from the main novels as I would like to have a bash at finding a publisher for them at some point, as unlikely as that might be!
