Jess had spent the day practically quivering with excitement.

Becker had closeted himself in the armoury and had emerged only to increase his caffeine intake.

Matt had cultivated an even straighter face than usual.

Connor had gone around with a big grin on his face and Abby had taken delight in providing an explanation for Emily’s benefit in earshot of Lester’s open door.

When the alarm sounded and steel shutters started to roll down over the doors, Lester did his best to hide his relief.

It looked like he’d been spared the horror of karaoke night at the Black Swan.
