Lester stared out over the high walls of the compound.
The killing zone was brightly lit, but they were nearing the last of their fuel, so soon the lights would go out.
Beyond the deliberately scorched earth the predators prowled ceaselessly, but they hadn’t attached the refuge for 98 days, nor had his people done anything to disturb the fragile truce, if truce it was.
But the foraging party was late returning and Lester was worried.
When the first severed head came flying over the wall he knew it meant war.
A final war they had little chance of winning.
