Claudia looked around wondering where the faint smell of burning was coming from. It certainly wasn’t the weather for a barbeque.

The front door was ajar and she could hear the shrill beep of a smoke alarm inside the house.

“Nick? Is everything all right?”

“Aye, it’ll all be fine!” called an irrepressibly cheerful voice from the kitchen. “Just needs a wee bit trimming off the outside, that’s all.”

“I’ll pour myself a drink and just leave you to it for a while, shall I?”

She had a feeling she was going to need all the alcohol she could get.
