The chittering was closer now.

He pictured the creatures, stalking him through the undergrowth, feathered crests raised like plumes, beaks open as they emitted a series of trills and chirrups.

The small raptors were herding him, acting like a flock of sheep that had turned on the sheepdog.

The minute they stopped herding and started biting, he’d be in trouble.

Intent on escape, he’d missed the creeping darkness, but when the bright sun was veiled, the forest suddenly went quiet.

Howard Kanan seized his opportunity and made a dash for the cliff face.

It was time to learn to climb.
