Keeping their small, adrift community together was taking everything he had to give.

“I’m not sure he’s listening,” Danny Quinn commented “I think you’re umpteen million years too early. Anyway, do you lot even believe in evolution?”

“I’m a Jesuit not a happy-clappy fundie. Will you make confession, Danny?”

“It’s been a while,” From a long-ago childhood he dredged up the almost-forgotten words. “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned…”

And he had.
