Wind-blown brown hair, casual jacket, faded khaki trousers and a pair of boots that have seen better days.
“Helen!” Nick pushes through the throng of people, elbowing his way to the kerb as a bus sails past, blocking his line of sight.
He weaves recklessly in and out of the traffic, ignoring honking horns and swearing drivers.
She’s been swallowed up by the Saturday shoppers.
He looks around wildly, then sees her walking on, not looking back.
“Helen!” Nick runs, closing the distance then grabbing her arm.
She turns, eyes wide, and his hand falls away, his world collapsing again.
