Sir James Lester threw himself down on the rough grass gasping theatrically, “Beer, for the love of God, Jon, please!”
Lyle shook his head. “Not until the summit, sweetie.”
“Not far now,” commented Stephen.
“Bugger off, Hart,” muttered Lester.
“It’s lovely at the top,” said Vicky Thornton, cheerfully. “Come on, look, it’s all sparkly in the sun.”
Ryan looked down at Lester in amusement. “She means Bassenthwaite,” he explained, pointing across the valley to the lake.
“I hate to break it to you, darling,” said Stephen, staring uphill, sounding calmer than he felt, “but she doesn’t mean that at all.”
Lyle shook his head. “Not until the summit, sweetie.”
