The Director of Special Forces looked up as Ryan entered the room. “Coffee, Captain?”

Ryan’s heart sank. Oh shit, where now? Not Kabul again?

Oh well, at least the flowers in Helmand Province were pretty at this time of year, even if they did give him hay-fever.

“Biscuits?”

Fuck, it’s Baghdad.  If he offers  cake, I’m resigning.

“We’ve had a request from the Home Office for back-up, Captain. UK based.”

Sod, it, more anti-terrorist paranoia. “That’s nice, sir.” Poker-faced.

The Director sighed. “No it’s not.” There was no easy way of putting this. “ I’m sorry, Ryan, it involves scientists.”

Oh my. I have visions of Ryan and his men shepherding his gaggle of geeks through an anomaly one day, to be stopped by an armed phalanx of Reptile Command velociraptors in full tortoise-shell tac fests, herding their gaggle of primordial spider-scientists through another anomaly!

There'd be a raspy voice, slightly whistley, which would rasp out, "Move along, mammals, nothing to see here!"

I love how the Director is just as aware of how much trouble scientists are as Ryan is. I bet they have a motto in their office - 'Don't work with children, animals, or scientists (even if they're hot and sexy)'.

But Charlie and Larry are sexy and cute, and would slash so well with the Primeval guys, and I am sooooooooo planning a possible crossover at some point ........... as someone pointed out to me, the alpha-maleness of Don/Ryan would be a wonderful combination, especially with Stephen watching ..........soooo much pretty that my brain would surely break ........

This was inspired by a friend who was working in Kabul at the time. Who had a very similar life.

No, it's good news, thankfully. He told the Govt where to stick their job. Then they asked him if he's go to Iraq instead. Thankfully he said no, and is now mainly retired from war zones. I heaved a huge sigh of relief.

Oh thank goodness. I hope he's enjoying whatever he's doing now. I have no doubt he absolutely deserves to.

Still does a bit of consultancy on the reconstruction of war-torn countries, but mainly takes his teenaged girls on lovely holidays and does some gardening, which is way less stressful for his long-suffering friends, thank goodness.
