Lester looked up and saw a black-clad figure lounging in the doorway of his office.
“The overtime budget was exhausted last month, Captain.”
“Chocolates.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Or maybe flowers. Yes, I think flowers would be nice. Might stop my flat looking quite so sterile.”
“Have you been drinking?”
“Champagne. That’d go really well with the chocolates and the flowers.”
“Becker, I am beginning to have serious doubts about your sanity.”
“Well, you told me not to expect a kiss.”
“Don’t pout. Anyway, I didn’t know you cared.”
“Yes, you bloody well did,” grinned Becker. “But Christine Johnson didn’t.”
