Lester sat down on a boulder and stared around the muddy chamber in disgust.

“Is there something you’d like to tell me, oh light of my tortured existence?”

“We’ve been here before,” Lyle announced brightly, blithely ignoring the question as he knelt down and examined a crack in the rock that looked too small to take even a malnourished hamster.

“Yes, sweetpea, I know we have. It was about an hour ago and we were lost then, as well.”

Lyle grinned. “I have a confession to make, darling.” He pointed at the crack. “The shortest way out is that way.”

The dialogue is pretty much straight out of actual events. It's amazing how often blokes are capable of saying 'we've been here before' as if that suddenly makes them less lost.

The other line that never fails to make me want to smack people is: "It's a well-travelled route.' To which the reply is, 'Yes, every other bugger was lost as well!'
