Becker took up his accustomed pose in front of Lester’s desk, hands linked loosely behind his back.

Lester looked up from the CV on his desk and raised one eyebrow enquiringly.

“His army career checks out. I’ve spoken to two of the men he trained with. It’s the same Matt Anderson.”

“And the bit about climbing Everest?”

“Total bollocks.”

Lester smiled wolfishly. “We won’t hold that against him, will we, Captain?”

“We won’t?”

“Absolutely not. And when I’ve given him the job, I shall expect you to find out exactly why he went to so much trouble to get it.”
