The student brushed carefully at the dry earth of the cave floor revealing the delicate finger bones of a woman who had lived, died and been buried nearly 120,000 years ago, her body strewn with ochre.
A glint of gold caught the girl’s eye and she continued to brush away the reddish soil until a slim band was revealed, encircling what was clearly the third finger of the left hand.
Her eyes widened. “Professor Jones, I think there’s something you need to see!”
As her supervisor hurried over, the girl smiled. This was going to make headlines the world over.
