Connor stared out over the rooftops, revelling in the ever-present light pollution of the city.

In the Cretaceous, the only light at night had come from the moon, the stars and the flickering flames of the fire they’d spent so much of time keeping alight.

Without fire they’d had no means of cooking meat, heating water, keeping warm or fending off the curious – and often deadly – creatures of the night.

So they’d learned to take no chances, and no matter how tempting it was, they’d never both slept at the same time.

That was proving a hard habit to break.

It's a term that gets used quite a lot over here now. I certainly notice the difference when I'm in rural France rather than the UK.
