“No, I’m terribly sorry, Minister, Sir James has just left.”

Lorraine held up an imperious hand and waved Lester into silence.

“Yes, Minister, I emailed the report five minutes ago.”

She nodded in response to Lester’s raised eyebrow.

“Oh course, Minister. Captain Ryan made sure that Professor Cutter didn’t get anywhere near Her Majesty on this occasion.”

Lorraine had clearly decided to draw a discreet veil over Cutter’s encounter with the Duke of Edinburgh.

“My pleasure, Minister.” She replaced the phone and declared loudly, “Wanker!”

Lester smiled benignly.

It was always entertaining when his secretary consigned professionalism to the dustbin.
