Summary : Written for [livejournal.com profile] talliw’s birthday. I hope you have a lovely day and that you enjoy this. It’s taken from a prompt you gave me a few months ago.

Do you think they do what we do in bed?”

The question caught Stephen unawares. He’d been immersed in catching up with some paperwork and writing a report on the last anomaly incursion while Nicky dealt with the mountain of filing that had built up, his companion’s activities providing yet another reminder of the differences between the clone and the man whose DNA he shared. Stephen knew perfectly well that the original Nick Cutter had never done any filing in his entire life.

Stephen rewound the last couple of minutes in his head and realised that Cutter and Jenny had walked past the half-open door, deep in conversation.

The thought of Nick Cutter and Jenny Lewis engaging in an energetic bout of anal sex nearly made him choke on his coffee. “I don’t think Cutter’s quite that uninhibited.”

Nicky grinned. “I didn’t mean that. But they were up to something in the stationary cupboard yesterday, I’m certain of it.”

“The stationary cupboard?” Stephen’s eyebrows collided with his hairline at speed. The idea of Cutter and Jenny making out in a stationary cupboard was almost as improbable as his previous thought had been.

Nicky nodded. “Even Lester noticed.” The clone stood up. “I’m going to see if the professor needs any filing doing. I like filing.”

“You like baiting Cutter as well and don’t deny it.”

Nicky assumed an air of innocence, made a rude gesture that he’d picked up off one of the soldiers and sauntered out. Stephen knew perfectly well that he was intending mischief. Stephen gave his lover a five minute head start and then picked up a book he’d borrowed from Cutter and, under the pretext of returning it, made his way to his friend’s office to see what Nicky was getting up to.

He could tell from the blush on Cutter’s cheeks that something had been going on. Stephen had already learned that Nicky’s almost childlike air of innocence hid a wicked sense of humour and he took great delight in getting a rise out of his more serious counterpart.

Cutter had been out of hospital for nearly two weeks and had been allowed to return to the ARC on light duties. The alternative had been that someone would have finished what his ex-wife had started and put Cutter out of everyone else’s misery. Light duties mean strictly no attendance at anomaly shouts, which had been the hardest part of all to enforce but Lester had been unrelenting on that particular point. Their acerbic boss was edging closer to allowing Nicky to attend call-outs, but it had been deemed a bad idea to let Cutter’s replica to accompany the team into the field when Cutter himself was still being forced to kick his heels back at base.

Jenny had proved remarkably adept at deflecting the worst of Cutter’s bad moods, displaying a patience that had seemed almost at odds with her usual brisk, no-nonsense manner. Stephen had watched the two of them gradually edging closer together and, somewhat to his surprise, they were now very definitely dating, and even Cutter didn’t trouble to deny it. He looked happier than Stephen had ever known, despite the enforced absence from fieldwork, and Stephen was finally able to enjoy his friend’s happiness without experiencing the pangs of jealousy that had previously always marred their relationship, even though Stephen had never gone as far as admitting that to himself until recently.

Stephen had learned very quickly that whilst Nicky was physically identical to the man whose name, DNA and even memories he shared, they were otherwise two very different characters. Nicky still hadn’t learned how to access all the memories he possessed but steady progress was being made. Helen’s programming of her creation had been rudimentary but with the help of a clinical psychologist brought in by Lester, Nicky was gradually learning how to unlock the secrets of his mind. The frustration that had manifested itself in almost physical pain when the cone had struggled to understand something now reared its head less and less and Nicky would usually come back from his sessions with Dr. Martin brimming with energy, keen to show off his new knowledge.

Lester had also insisted that Cutter should have some sessions with the same man and, instead of doing his best to be obstreperous, which Stephen had expected, he had agreed. Cutter would usually emerge thoughtful rather than bouncy, but it was clear that both men were benefitting from having a neutral person with whom they could open up. Stephen was all too conscious of the fact that it couldn’t have been easy for his old friend to discover that the woman he had once loved had created a copy of him with the sole purpose of ending his life, but the sadness he must have felt at Helen’s actions did not appear to have overshadowed his dealings with Nicky.

From almost the first moment he’d regained consciousness in hospital, Cutter had been most insistent that the clone bore no responsibility for Helen’s actions, and had been equally determined that Nicky was not to be treated like a laboratory specimen, something Stephen had been equally forceful about. To his credit, Lester had taken their new addition very much in his stride and even seemed prepared to accommodate Nicky within the team, although in what capacity no one yet knew. They would need a cover story so far as non-ARC personnel were concerned, and in some ways, using a variant of Cutter’s own first name was something of a hindrance in that regard, cutting off an obvious line of retreat into a story regarding twin brothers, but the psychologist had advised against any attempt to change Nicky’s name now. They needed to work on establishing his identity not undermining what had already been built up, so Nicky he would remain.

Stephen had confidence in Jenny’s ability to find some sort of suitable explanation for Nicky’s presence, and they were already working on some changes to his appearance, guided by Nick’s own preferences. His hair was now shorter, more in the style that Cutter had favoured in the early days of the anomaly project. It stood up in rough-cut spikes rather than the longer, softer style that Cutter had ended up with largely by accident when he had simply been to busy to pay a visit to the hairdresser. Cutter had always been prone to stubble, often forgetting to shave for several days, but his liaison with Jenny had brought that to an abrupt end. Jenny obviously had no liking for stubble rash, so Stephen’s old friend was now smooth-shaven most of the time, which paved the way for Nicky to develop his own individuality in the shape of a close-cropped beard. Stephen thought it suited him.

From what Stephen could see, Nicky appeared to be on a mission to wheedle information out of Cutter about his presumed activities in the stationary cupboard, a scenario that Stephen still found it hard to get his head around.

“Stephen!” Cutter exclaimed with evident relief.

Stephen smiled and handed him the book. “Thanks for the loan of this. I think the chapter on raptors needs some amendment, but I doubt anyone would believe us. How’s the filing going?”

“Nicky’s almost finished. I’ll make us all some tea,” Cutter declared, eyeing up the door like a man who would have been prepared to start digging an escape tunnel if they’d hadn’t been on the second story of the building.

“Coffee, please,” Nicky said sweetly, looking like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

“Aye, I keep forgetting, sorry,” Cutter mumbled, making a bolt for the safety of the corridor.

Stephen watched him go, trying very hard not to laugh. “You’re a bloody menace,” he commented to Nicky as soon as Cutter was too far away to hear him.

Nicky adopted his most angelic expression, a look Cutter had would never have managed to pull off even if he’d been minded to make the attempt. “I only asked him whether her lipstick left a red ring around his cock.”

Stephen gave way to the laughter that had been bubbling up inside him for the last few minutes. “No bloody wonder the poor man was nearly puce by the time I arrived. What on earth did he say?”

“Apparently she carries tissues everywhere and it wipes off easily.”

“I can’t believe he told you that!”

Nicky’s eyes danced with laughter. “He probably thought I’d ask Jenny if he didn’t tell me.”

“Ask Jenny what?” said a voice from the doorway. She pointed a red-nailed finger at Nicky. “You’ve been making mischief again. And how did you manage to get Nick to make the tea and coffee? He’s resisted all my attempts at domestication so far.” She smiled at Stephen and said, “You wouldn’t consider a swap, would you? There are times when I’m convinced I’ve taken up with the wrong Cutter.”

Stephen slid his arm around Nicky’s waist and gave him a hug. “Would it make you even more jealous if I told you he’s turning out to be a pretty good cook as well?”

“I definitely made the wrong choice.” Jenny’s eyes danced with almost as much mischief as Nicky’s. “But maybe we can do something about that… I’m sure I can come up with an excellent cover story for a set of triplets whose mother had an extremely unoriginal line in first names…”

This is utterly precious.

(And I'm laughing because I'm actually writing a AotB voyeur story involving a cupboard)

Clone!fic! Awesome!

Love the fact that Nick and Nicky's characters are different. It proves they're not completely identical or interchangeable and that they're two seperate persons.

LOL at “I only asked him whether her lipstick left a red ring around his cock.”

That was great, I love Jenny's comments & I forgot to mention in the Nick discussion that the clone!fics are good & make me wish the writers hadn't just killed the cloneNick off. I think it's an interesting thing to explore - how similar a clone would be to the original person.
