As Ryan drove back through the security checkpoint at the Anomaly Research Centre, a massive starburst of fireworks lit up the sky ushering in the New Year with a bang. The area would no doubt shortly start to resemble a minor Balkan war in more ways that one.

The guard on duty wished him a happy new year. Ryan managed to refrain from commenting that it wouldn’t take much to make it happier than the previous one.

“Happy New Year,” he replied dutifully, dredging up a smile and a nod from the wreckage of yet another dinosaur-filled day.

“Will anyone else be coming back tonight, sir?” the man asked.

Ryan shook his head. “I’ve packed the rest of them off home.” He was intending to check their weaponry back into the armoury, grab a beer from the fridge in the recreation room and then get some sleep in one of the bunkrooms. He had absolutely no desire to run the traditional gauntlet of drunken pedestrians and zealous policemen just to get back to his flat for what would remain of the night.

By the time he’d accomplished the return of the mini arsenal that accompanied them on every anomaly call-out it was 12.45am and Ryan was feeling knackered. Cleaning the kit they’d used would have to wait until the following day. Ryan flicked off the light in the armoury and closed the door. He now needed to get the rucksack from his car that contained the clean clothes he’d brought in from home to replace the ever-growing pile of grubby gear in his locker then keep a date with a can of cold beer.

As he walked back through the atrium, his rucksack over his shoulder, Ryan noticed that the light was still on in Lester’s office. On impulse, he made his way up the ramp, wondering if the man was actually waiting for a report to be delivered, even though he had delivered one by phone after the anomaly had closed.

As he approached, Lester looked up from the pile of paperwork on his desk and gave a slight smile. “Good work today, Captain.”

Ryan returned the smile. “Thanks, sir. We were lucky.”

Lester shook his head. “I beg to differ, Ryan. You were good. There is a difference between lucky and good. Cutter is lucky. You are a consummate professional.”

The surprise must have shown on Ryan’s face even though he’d tried to disguise his amazement at Lester handing out a compliment.

Lester’s smile turned slightly rueful. “I clearly don’t express my appreciation often enough.” He opened a desk drawer and pulled out a bottle of expensive-looking brandy. “Can I tempt you to a nightcap?”

“I was thinking about grabbing a beer and heading to bed, sir,” Ryan said carefully, not quite sure how to react to a Lester who was showing a disturbing resemblance to a human being for once.

“Of course. Don’t let me keep you… Happy New Year, Captain.”

Ryan hesitated, already regretting his previous words. Lester looked like a man who needed company and Ryan was no stranger to drinking alone, so he knew how it felt. “Actually, sir, a nightcap would be good.”

Lester pushed his chair back from the desk and stood up. “I propose a compromise. How does a beer followed by a brandy chaser should?”

Ryan grinned. “Like a really good idea, sir.”

One beer and one brandy chaser soon turned into several. There was even an unopened packet of mince pies in the fridge that they soon made short work of. As the time advanced steadily into the small hours of the morning, Ryan discovered more about his enigmatic boss than he’d learned in the entirety of his time on the anomaly project. The reason Lester was still in the ARC on New Year’s Eve was simple. His decree absolute had come through two days previously and he had no one to go home to. A state of affairs that Ryan was all too familiar with since his own marriage had come to an end.

By 2am they’d compared notes on their ex-wives and decided that the two women must have been related. By 3am they’d finished all the beer in the fridge, eaten a packet of chocolate biscuits as well as the mince pies and watched the level in the brandy bottle decrease alarmingly.

Eventually, by mutual assent, they made a half-hearted attempt at tidying up the mess they’d left strewn across the recreation room table before giving it up as a bad job and making their way, a trifle unsteadily, to the bunkrooms.

Lester paused in the doorway of one of the twin bedded rooms in the section mainly used by the civilian workers and raised one elegant eyebrow. “Would it seem terribly unprofessional if I was to suggest that tonight might not be a good night for either of us to sleep alone, Ryan?”

Ryan thought about Lester’s words for a moment, trying to formulate an appropriate response. Eventually, he dealt with the matter by the simple expedient of echoing Claudia Brown’s reply to Lester nearly 18 months ago. “Stuff professionalism.”

Lester smiled. “I was rather hoping you’d take that view.”

It proved easy enough to push the two narrow beds together. Clothes were shed in a surprisingly leisurely manner by the light of the moonlight filtering in from the window until they were both naked. Lester’s body was lean, carrying not an ounce of spare fat. They’d both drunk enough to stop a bull elephant in its tracks, so Ryan didn’t think that much was on the cards beyond a kiss and maybe a mutual wank, but he was just pleased not to be alone in a cold bed.

This wasn’t how he’d expected to see the New Year in, and he imagined the same could be said for Lester. They traded lazy kisses that tasted pleasantly of mince pies and brandy, and managed to bring each other off in an uncoordinated but very satisfying mutual hand-job before snuggling close and slipping into sleep, with Lester’s head pillowed comfortably on Ryan’s shoulder.

Contrary to Ryan’s original expectation, maybe the New Year might be something to look forward to, after all.
