(#68 The Ocean)
Becker drew back his arm, hesitated for a moment and then sent the stone skipping across the wave-tops with considerable force.
“Eight!” he announced with satisfaction.
Ryan grinned. A week working with Becker had proved beyond doubt that the young captain was quite possibly the most competitive person Ryan had ever known.
He was also considerably better at skimming stones than Ryan.
Ryan looked around him for yet another flat stone.
There were certainly worse ways to spend a day than sitting on a beach waiting for an anomaly half in and half out of a cliff face to close.
(#60 Summer)
Ryan watched as Becker plucked at his tight black teeshirt.
Neither of them was really dressed for a day on a deserted Cornish beach in the height of summer.
It reminded him of the time in the Permian when he’d carried Cutter’s unconscious body up hill and down dale. He’d been sweating cobs and in no mood to put up with Cutter being an arse.
Decking him for the second time had been quite therapeutic.
And if the talking-to he’d given Cutter the previous night over copious amounts of alcohol hadn’t worked, he’d be very tempted to deck him again.
(#165 If at first you don’t succeed…)
“Has he always been this stubborn?” Becker muttered.
“What do you think?”
Becker sighed. “I didn’t sign up to be a bloody social worker, but even I want to lock them in a room until they sort themselves out. Anyone with half a brain can see that they’re besotted with each other.”
“That’s what I told him.”
Becker’s eyebrows shot up. “What did he say?”
“He spent the next five minutes choking on his beer.”
Ryan threw the stone he’d selected. It failed to beat Becker’s last effort.
It was a good job they were playing to best of ten.
(#180 Persistence)
Becker glanced over his shoulder. “They’re talking.”
“Lester says they’ve been talking for months, doesn’t look like it’s done them much good, though.”
“No, I mean really talking. Up-close and personal style talking.”
Ryan gave up any attempt to be subtle and followed Becker’s lead, turning and staring at the men who had once been closer than any two people he’d ever known.
Until Helen Cutter’s nasty little bombshell had wrecked their lives.
Becker was right. They were standing closer together than they had been any time since Ryan’s return.
Maybe he really had managed to get through to Cutter.
(#49 Sacrifice)
“You’d have thought Hart nearly managing to top himself would have been enough of an ice-breaker,” Becker said, conclusively proving that soldiers liked to gossip as much as anyone else, if not more.
“They’re blokes, mate. We don’t talk about our feelings, remember?”
“Not unless we’re pissed out of our fucking brains,” Becker conceded. “And they’re both stone-cold sober.”
“Looks like they are talking, though.”
“Cutter’s even smiling.”
“So’s Hart.”
“Breakthrough time?”
“If it is, Lester’s going to be a happy bunny. He’s spent the last few months expecting Hart to pull another stunt like that just prove the point.”
(#59 Joy)
Ryan winced. “Once was enough.”
“Looks like Cutter thinks so, too. Fancy a bet on how long it’ll take them to start snogging?” Becker looked hopefully at Ryan.
Ryan shook his head.
Becker liked betting almost as much as he liked winning but from where Ryan was sitting, it was a foregone conclusion that there was going to be snogging sometime soon.
Nick Cutter looked like a man who had just had a road to Damascus moment and Stephen Hart looked like someone had just lifted the weight of the world off his shoulders and lobbed it through the anomaly.
(#30 Forgiveness)
Cutter and Hart hadn’t gone as far as snogging, but there had definitely been a hug that had ventured some distance beyond simple manly bonding.
Ryan and Becker smiled indulgently and shared a look of satisfaction.
Ryan didn’t think he could take all the credit for the transformation.
For all Becker’s claims that he hadn’t signed up to be a social worker, Ryan knew perfectly well that he’d spent as long the previous night talking to Stephen as Ryan had with Cutter.
Maybe now the team really could get back to doing what it did best.
Dealing with the anomalies.

Date: 2012-02-19 11:08 pm (UTC)PS I love the idea of Ryan and Becker running a dating agency. I'v always wanted Mum to write a modern AU with Llud as a driving instructor for some odd reason but she's not into AUs much.
