Lyle lent back against the bar and started on his sixth beer of the night. A whisky chaser was lined up already.

There was something to be said for this back to school lark. The booze was bloody cheap, for one thing.

He glanced over at the noisy, cheerful group around one table and remarked to his companion, “Nice to see your boyfriend’s stopped giving me the evil eye. What did you say to convince him?”

Ryan sighed. There were times when Lyle noticed too much. “It wasn’t what I said that did the trick.”

Lyle shot him a quick glance and grinned. “I guessed that’s why you’ve been wearing long sleeves for two days, even though it’s as hot as hell in here.”  In response to Ryan’s silence he added, “Was it fun?”

The look Ryan gave him would have curdled milk.

“So he now knows you trust him?”

Ryan’s normally hard grey eyes softened as he looked over at his black-haired lover, laughing at some remark of Connor’s. “I trust him, and he knows it. That’s what matters.”

The lieutenant nodded. Trust was important in their job.

In a voice as cold as a winter’s sky, Ryan added, “But if I ever need a bullet in the head, that’s still your job, mate.”

Lyle went from pleasantly drunk to stone cold sober in a heartbeat.

His hazel eyes met Ryan’s without flinching and he nodded.

There were some things no lover should ever be asked to do.

Thanks. I didn't want to spoil the mood, but as I just said to neevebrody, I wrote this on Monday after a bad day, and it did seem to fit the theme.

I'm very fond of Lyle, I must admit. I think it's time he got to have some more fun with Lester :)

Very interesting. I'm really going to have to go back to the start of this, but I didn't have anything pressing so I clicked, 'cause you know I've been meaning to start these. So, Lyle is your creation? Does Lyle have any interest in Ryan?

Yes, Lyle's mine. He appeared quite early on in the series, very close to the beginning, I think. No neither of them and an "interest" in each other in that way, but Stephen had a very brief flash of jealously early on, which came up again in/after Ice Age, and sort of culminated in the Trust series, which was effectively my excuse for a long awaited bondage!fuck. Didn't turn out quite how I expected, but this Epilogue was effectively written on Monday night after a somewhat dark day, and seemed to round it all off, in more ways than one.

Yes, that's what I was aiming at. The fact that there's more than one type/level of trust in his life and that none of them are mutually exclusive.

Yes, it was a bit meepish for me too, but I wrote it on a bad day, and to be honest the idea for that scene was in my head from just after word ate the disasterous first version, so for once the damned computer did me a favour. (And I have to admit it was operator error anyway!).

BTW, I forgot to say the first section that I LOVE the team having to go to class. There definitely needs to be more of this.

It is just a hypothetical scenario, don't worry. I think munchkin summed up what I was trying to get at in her comment (see reply to that). Ryan's bond with Lyle is equally strong, but in a different way, and no, I don;t see him letting Lyle tie him up and fuck him through the mattress, so I shall probably be disappointing those after a threesome!! Lol.

A very neat, yet powerful, way to wrap up this fic! In a scenario that has been all about trust and commitment, I can see both Ryan and Lyle understanding that different situations require a different level of commitment. A level of commitment that can never be asked of an outsider - even if that outsider is your lover and right beside you if and when it all goes wrong.

I know your preference would be for the end of episode 6 to go down completely differently, or to have episode 1 of season 2 fix it... but in my twisted little heart I'd like to see how you'd handle Lyle being there beside Nick at the end. I can't imagine that body being left behind, even if Nick remembers having found it.

I think you've just summed up exactly what I was aiming for here, with the added thing that there's no way Ryan would ever want to load that sort of guilt on his lover.

Half of me is tempted to try and do something with a post-ep 6 scenario, but because of the problem that I mainly only seem to be able to write in a linear fashion, that would rather scupper me for continuimg this, unless I followed Telperion's splendid lead. But either way, if I continue with this, I'm doomed to end up AU anyway. (But to an extent all slash fanfic is AU anyway .....)

The main problem for me is that when real life gets shit, I like my writing for relaxation, and I'm not sure whether I'd want to handle a situation quite as bad as that one would be. But you never know ...........

'cause now I'm thinking, what if Stephen was put in that kind of situation... even if he doesn't go through with it because the calvary arrives in the nick of time....

I think my PC has fallen in love with your Ryan, because when it came to the bit about the bullet to the head, it had a nervous breakdown, refused to read any further and shut down so it could go and sob under the desk.

I've manage to talk it round by convincing it that no, Ryan isn't about to be killed, honestly, and we can go back and look at the pretty picspams again if it likes?

I think I've convinced it.

(And this chapter has kicked my plotbunny back into life, and I have another idea nagging to get written. My envisioned three-part fic is potentially expanding by the day, goodness knows when I'll get to the smut. :) )

Holy shit. I just read this Trust series in one go bc apparently sleep is not important. It was incredibly hot and funny too (I loved the image of insects doing the Strictly Come Dancing final lol). And it's so awesome to see they are so happy together. And yay for Lyle, I think I'm developing a little crush. lol Who am I kidding, I'm far beyond that already. lol But anyway, these last lines were the best, bc I'm an angst whore, can't help it. *grins*
