A/N: After a gap of 40 years, I have now written Arthur of the Britons fanfic again. The wheel really does turn full circle if you wait long enough!

The horse walked slowly towards him, once-proud head now drooping, dark coat no longer shining.

His days of carrying a rider into battle were gone, but there would be no sharp knife for him, he had earned an honourable retirement.

Arthur held out a withered apple, the last of the summer’s crop.

His friend nuzzled his hand and the apple was taken gently.

Then together they watched as a new-born foal, the colour of a bright moon, left the others and walked towards them on shaky legs.

This was the one, they both knew it.

They had found his successor.

When I saw the title I thought of Elizabeth Goudge's 'The Little White Horse' that I absolutely loved and the house in it that was called Moonacre Manor.

This is a beautiful beautiful drabble.

*waves more of those startled pigeons*

This is an epic drabble. I love how Arthur gives the old horse an apple that's the last of the summer crop. As the old horse could also be having his last summer.

That's adorable - Arthur giving the horse retirement instead of death, them sharing a moment, and then the passing on of the baton!
