“George Fuller… Kevin Davies…”

Before Becker’s time, but he knew all their names.

“Sally Dawson… Tina Merrell…”

They had died in Oliver Leek’s onslaught on the ARC, an attack in which Lester had very nearly lost his own life.

“Nick Cutter… Sarah Page…”

Their names were like knives in Becker’s heart. He’d sworn to protect the team but fat lot of good he had done.

“David Evans… Raymond Murphy…

Lester’s annual recitation of the names of those who had died in the service of the anomaly project finally ended.

Becker closed his eyes and allowed the silence to claim him.

Bloody hell. How awful. Lest we forget, I suppose, but poor Becker.

Very powerful end line - and I like that the background characters get named and remembered too. A few days ago I was watching the scene where Lester is looking through the deserted atrium and there are bloodied glasses, and we don't find out if the staff are just being held prisoner elsewhere in the ARC or what...

I'm very glad on a selfish level that I'm reading this after buying my poppy, and I love the idea of the ARC having their own memorial service.

Oof, that gave me shivers. So simple, but chillingly effective.
