As the anomaly response vehicles streamed out of the garage, Lester returned to his office and the ever-growing mounds of paperwork clamouring for his attention.
He placed his mobile phone on the desk in its accustomed place then shuffled papers and did his best to concentrate. But try as he might to distract himself, he couldn’t help hoping that today would be the day he’d receive a call telling him that Danny, Connor and Abby had returned safely.
And every time the phone rang but it wasn’t the hoped-for call, he had to try even harder to maintain that hope.
