In response to a burst of noise from the hen coop, Laura Davies rushed outside carrying her shotgun.
She had no intention of losing any more birds to the fox’s gluttonous desire to kill.
She arrived in time to see a tawny shape streaking off, pursued by a brightly-coloured flash of feathers that she’d never seen before.
When the stranger returned, it had a tuft of fur in its oddly-shaped beak.
It was, without a doubt, the weirdest-looking chicken she had ever seen in her life.
But it had done a bloody good job of getting rid of the fox.
