Nick Cutter was a man who rarely evinced surprise, despite the sometimes startled appearance of his hair, but he certainly looked surprised now.
“You can’t do this!” Nick brandished the note Stephen had just given him. “You’re needed here.”
Stephen turned to leave. There was no point in arguing.
“Stephen! We need to talk…”
“The time for talking was eight years ago. But I missed that particular boat.”
“We can change things…”
“As you keep saying, Cutter, we can’t change the past. You know that as well as I do.”
But Stephen wished with all his heart that they could.

So angsty - Stephen admitting his faults and resigned to what he thinks is the inevitable, but Cutter is very stubborn and I'm sure that a moment later Nick tackles him and firmly convinces him that they can work things out
