Nick walked into the staffroom and, as had become depressingly usual these days, conversations abruptly fell silent.

The temptation to remark loudly, Do feel free to check my cupboards to make sure I haven’t stowed her body anywhere, was almost overwhelming, but as the police had already done that, any outburst would fall rather flat.

He’d already run the gauntlet of sympathy and suspicion and his colleagues now seemed to regard him with a kind of wariness usually reserved for pitbull terriers and volatile toddlers.

He wondered when it was going to be possible to have a normal conversation again.

That's sad!

Kudos.

Oooh, I like that! Not something that gets much addressed in fic, but definitely the police would look at him first.

Poor Nick. He would be the first suspect.

Nicely done.

Depressingly accurate, that's probably exactly what happened.

Love the line a kind of wariness usually reserved for pitbull terriers and volatile toddlers.

Ouch! Yet another reason to resent Helen for leaving and letting the suspicion fall on Nick.

Poor Nick - great look at how things would have been for him.

Stephen will be along soon, Nick, and then neither of you will feel so alone...

Poor Cutter, that's exactly what would have happened. Helen is very evil!

Veeery nice. Neatly sums up that kind of grubby speculation that's never quite openly voiced and never quite goes away.

Poor Nick, no doubt the rumour mill went into overdrive when Helen disappeared.
