The creature advancing into the shimmering heat of the arena looked like the bastard offspring of a grizzly bear and a wolf.

He watched it pace forward, head swinging from side to side, sniffing the air.

Sand scattered onto the rough ground failed to disguise the bloodstains left by an earlier combat.

The girl’s terrified screams still rang in his ears.

A man leaned against the railings above him and threw down a short-bladed knife.

“Don’t say we didn’t give you a sporting chance.”

He picked up the knife. There was going to be nothing sporting about what happened next.

I squeaked to start with, but after looking at the character note, I knew immediately that the only one that was going to be carried out was the amphicyon...
Poor thing didn't stand a chance.

And neither will those in charge once Blade's through with the creature...

That was a really bad move on the guy's part. A really, really, fatally bad move. I'd say 'oh dear', but I don't care enough about his wellbeing. Get a move on, Blade, there's more than one organism in that arena that deserves your attention. :P

If it ever gets written, this might be part of a long fic in my S/R universe. The first chapter was written 6 years ago, so not been hanging around too long. *g*

One chapter. It's a Numb3rs crossover. But the seeds for it have been planted in the S/R verse from a long time ago, although I doubt I would remember.

But I probably want to write the cruise ship fic first....
