“I didn’t do it! I loved my wife!”

The man broke down into body-wracking sobs.

DI Jamie Cross stared impassively at their suspect.

Arthur Davidson’s wife had been found disembowelled in the garden of their Surrey mansion. Sadly the nearest and dearest were always the first suspects.

The door opened and DS Franklin stuck her head in. “There’s a woman from the Home Office out front, boss. Says it’s urgent.”

An hour later, the grieving husband had been taken to his brother’s house and DI Cross was listening while the extremely persuasive Ms Brown worked her magic on his superiors.
