The rhythmic bleep of the machines was strangely comforting, despite the number of wires, tubes and monitors that contrived to make the man in the bed look so very, very fragile.
Connor laid on hand gently on Nick’s, careful not to disturb whatever it was that was clamped to his finger.
“Come on, Professor,” he urged quietly. “I told you before I can’t do this without you.” He hesitated and then added, “And I ricked my back carrying you out of there…”
He was rewarded by a faint twitch of a smile on Nick’s face.
It was a good start.
