Emily slipped quietly between the cluster of huts.

They were meagre dwellings, their round walls made of woven sticks, plastered with sun-hardened mud.

She’d watched from the tree-line until she’d been sure there were no dogs to sound the alarm, then crept down into the valley when darkness fell.

She hated having to steal from people as poor as these seemed to be, but necessity was a hard mistress.

They had meat drying in the smoke of a fire, and she needed food.

Emily left behind a flint blade. It was all she could offer as apology for her theft.
