Jenny stared in amazement at the cat’s cradle of thin plastic tubes festooning Nick Cutter’s office. “There are times when I think James might have a point.”

Sarah nodded. “Cutter’s either a genius or utterly mad. I just haven’t quite worked out which.”

“Join the club. The Home Secretary will be here in half an hour. How on earth are we going to explain this?”

“Get someone to set the fire alarm off before she gets here.”

Jenny slipped her arm around Sarah’s waist and kissed her girlfriend’s soft cheek. “I knew there was a reason why I loved you.”
