Ryan woke up, shivering and dripping with sweat.

A glance at his bedside clock told him that if he didn’t get moving, he had no chance of getting to the Forest of Dean on time.

It was only sodding flu, but he felt like death warmed up and had spent most of the night in conversation with the great white telephone.

He managed to get upright, but his legs were as wobbly as a new-born foal’s.

There was no way he was going anywhere today.

He picked up his phone and pressed a newly-entered number.

“Ms Brown? It’s Captain Ryan….”
