The knock on the door surprised Stephen. He wasn’t expecting anyone, not after Helen’s little bombshell.
He limped down the hall to the door.
Connor stood there, a slightly uncertain grin on his face. He thrust a warm packet smelling strongly of vinegar at Stephen.
“Thought you might be hungry, so I stopped at the chippie.”
Stephen grinned back, equally uncertain. “Won’t Cutter mind?”
Connor looked puzzled. “What’s he got against fish and chips? Not that it’s any of his business. Anyway, you stuck up for me when he threw me off the team… Come on, mate, they’re getting cold...”
