“Are you sure, Nick?” Stephen stared at the clothes hanging in the wardrobe, trying to swallow around the lump in his throat.

“She’s not coming back, lad.” Nick spoke quietly but firmly. “It’s got to be done, and there are folks who’ll be glad of this lot.”

Nick reached in and took a dress off a hanger. He looked like he was about to say something but then shook his head and dropped the dress into a large cardboard box.

Stephen turned away, tears forming in his eyes.

Helen had been wearing that dress the first night he’d seen her.
