“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather stay on at school and finish your exams, Tom?”
Seventeen-year-old Tom Ryan shook his head emphatically. “Boring, gran, really boring.”
His eyes slid over to the photo of his grandfather on the mantelpiece, taken on the day of his passing out parade at Sandhurst. He’d gone on to become a captain in the Coldstream Guards. Tom had idolized him.
His gran smiled. “He’d be proud of you, Tom, but you have to do it for yourself, not just for him.”
Tom grinned. “I am, gran, honest.”
“Then you’d better tell your mum, hadn’t you?”
