The sound of her own breathing was loud in the darkness, as was the crunch of dried leaves underfoot.
Helen had concluded an hour ago that it was not possible to make silent progress in a wood at night.
The sharp crack of another piece of wood proved her point.
She’d been walking for half an hour and now had precious little chance of finding her way back to the car before daylight.
With hindsight, she had to admit that this was not one of her better ideas.
But it was still preferable to staying at home arguing with Nick.
