“All clear on your search areas?”

The four members of Greater Manchester Police’s Underwater Search and Marine Unit all nodded and gave their sergeant a thumbs-up.

“All right, in you go. Don’t forget your check-in times.”

The team quickly slipped into the grey-brown water of Salford Quays.

Almost immediately, Lydia Clements saw something that looked like a large, powerful searchlight cutting through the murky water.

She finned towards it, holding the sonar gun at arm’s length.

A moment later, it was jerked from her hand and disappeared into the light.

She carried on finning forwards.

That was her first mistake.
