“I’m sorry, sir, the barrier is stuck.”
Lester abandoned his car and followed a stream of staff across the car park in the pouring rain. He urgently needed coffee.
“It’s instant, I’m afraid. The machine’s on the blink.”
Along with the fire alarm, the ADD and the lifts. All of which were making irritating noises but doing nothing useful. Like the rest of his staff.
His diary promptly announced that an H&S inspection would start in 15 minutes.
“The Home Secretary is on the phone, Sir James… he says it’s urgent.”
Lester knew getting up had been a bad idea.
