Lester cast a surreptitious glance in the gilt-edged mirror, adjusting his tie for the final time.

He took his place in the line and waited in silence.

Despite his carefully-projected persona, this wasn’t his idea of fun, but he was accepting on behalf of all his colleagues, past and present.

By special dispensation, all those able to attend were there.

When his turn came, he walked briskly forward and knelt.

“I was wondering whether we’d have some unexpected guests today, Sir James,” the Queen said after lightly touching each shoulder with the sword.

Lester smiled. “Makes a nice change, ma’am.”
